I'm  reminded of another image ... where did I get this from?? But then.. 30 years ago I also took 'one eyed' portraits as seen by the image below the photograph of Tiziana..I took the bottom photograph working on 'The Hundred Echoes' at college. Most of the time, I only have a feeling that so,meshing is working for me. I prefer to trust in instinct... the analysis of the message...well that is something to write about perhaps. In the online world..words count so much. But, truly I would prefer to just let the images speak...!!

I haven't been there for 25 years...and the last trip was not the happiest event - girlfriend woes.. it's a long story.. suffice it to say I hadn't really had much to remember the city by except a sense of loss. So, when a colleague of mine in the Meet Up group Simple Street Photography suggest we host a trip to Athens as something different for the group I was pretty keen to go and rediscover the place.
 

It was a joyful experience! Not only were my travelling companions (some 16 people) great company but the city itself was so alive with energy..art..colour and life! So welcoming.. so easy to move through and we rarely experienced any form of camera shyness from those we chose to photograph. On just one instance - someone made a fuss at what he thought was a surreptitious portrait being taken (this was in fact an error on his part as no photograph had been made)... but otherwise on many occaisions people welcomed the attention...I took one small camera - the Fuji X100s as I knew I would spend most of my time looking out for my half of the group- and whilst I was not an "official guide" I was responsible for everyone being taken care of..looked after, not left behind. I'm pleased with these few images..taken whilst 'on duty' they express the colour I am interested in showing at present.. On the beach. Hand Held There is always something 'other' to do with a camera. After standing and taking tripod based long exposures of the shoreline, houses, and wreckage at Dungeness I attempted to photograph the heavy cloud and setting sun across the bay. Totally unsuccessful in bringing the 'feeling' of what i was seeing to life I just took the camera in hand and 'painted with light'. This felt much better to me- felt more akin to the wind and the sound of the sea... the motion of nature. Hand held at a few seconds it makes an image thats more abstracted, impressionistic- intuitive than all the steady tripod based one's (of this view).

The Dungeness ambience... Ok, so it's not obvious it is anywhere specific- butI know where this is- and against the many sharp and textured images I have taken in and around the area over the past 20 months, I'm happy that I can present something different- a counterpoint via Fuji X100s magic!!

We (photographers) can't recreate in the studio post capture as easily as a painter for example (who probably uses photographs as reference material in any case). No, we must get it right at the time. Which means a lot of journeys chasing the light (I travel 80 miles to get to Dungeness).. a lot can happen to the weather in 90 minutes of driving. On this day, I set off from London at about 5 pm and the sky was uniformly overcast for many miles, even sprinkled with showers... but despite my doubts I knew how easily this weather could change for the better beside the sea... coastal areas have their own micro systems it seems - certainly Dungeness, in Kent does!

I was blessed with a good two hours of lingering twilight  around sunset- with a great pattern of clouds scudding across the sky. iId walked the length of the one and only road and photographed several dwellings - single storey- wooden buildings when I saw this view. The lights on in the house were part of the ambience (Todd Hido is always in my head these days).. and then just as I had et up and made an initial exposure test, a figure appeared and paused in the window of the bungalow.. they stayed still for a few seconds. Amazing!! Long enough to take three frames, this one being the one with least movement! 

Taken on an X Pro 1 with 18mm (I think).. what does it matter?? I work on them quite a bit in Lightroom to reveal all the nuances...

]]> (Heiss Photo) alone calm colour drama dusk meaning photography realisation solitary twilight https://www.garyheiss.co.uk/blog/2015/8/between-the-dog-the-wolf Fri, 21 Aug 2015 12:47:41 GMT Sprout Arts Exhibition 2015 https://www.garyheiss.co.uk/blog/2015/8/iceland--sprout-arts-exhibition The forthcoming Sprout Arts show in SW 16, London which opens on Sept 1st features new work.. taken over the past 12 months in the UK and Iceland not only by myself but two fellow friends and talented photographers David Lillywhite and Danny Rowton.  It's a small gallery near Tooting Bec and Broadway which  forms a valuable space for local artists of all sorts to show work and meet the public to discuss the art they are presenting to anyone who is interested. it's not run for profit, which makes it very special in that a rich and diverse range of art is shown which may not find the light of day in other galleries.

I will be printing my work on Hahnemühle Bamboo paper for a beautiful. archival finish to my landscapes. Dave, Danny and I have all produced small reference books to accompany the work and would love to chat about the how's and why's if you can visit.

The gallery is located on Moyser Road in SW16 on the corner of Ribblesdale Road and Moyser Road. Private view is September 5th from 5pm -8pm and all are welcome.

Still in last minute edit mode (panic most people call it)..but largely there.

Not trying to sell you anything. Not interested in equipment (other than how it allows one to create images in a practical manner). Just want to use the time I have to talk about the 'ART' of photography because that's all I really give a damn about to be honest. More will follow...I'm done with commerce. With pay checks etc. this site and it's work is about me, mine and what I care passionately about...which is creating photographs that matter (to me) and maybe to others too.
